Do you know the definitions of Phrase, Clause and Sentence? Here you can learn it!
The PHRASE is any group of words that, unlike a sentence, has no subject-predicate combination. The phrases cannot stand alone as sentences. The most common one is the Prepositional Phrase, which starts with a preposition as in 'In the smoking crowded area'. A phrase can be replaced by one single word.
CLAUSES are grammatical units which consist of one subject and predicate with a main verb. An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. On the other hand, a subordinate does not express a complete thought, so it is not a sentence. There are many types of clauses, like Independent, subordinate, relative, noun clauses, etc.
A SENTENCE is a group of words containing a subject and a predicate and expressing a complete thought. The subject is what or whom the sentence is about and the predicate tells what the subject does or is or what is done to the subject. There are four types of sentences: simple, compound, complex and compound-complex.
